those happy highway...

Looking at British criminalstories at television can suddenly broaden your literary horizon,as the young inspector suddenly quotes a poem by Housman:

"Those happy highway where I went,
And cannot come again..."

Olika tider, olika platser

On writing
Stephen King writes that your writing desk should stand in the middle of the room and I think he maybe meant in the middle of your life, but he also stresses how important it is to close the door on your writing,
I've never done that, closed the door, but maybe the ears, to disconnect as much as possible from the things which are constantly happening around me. Maybe I should buy headphones, headphones, that is.
But it is of course also the thing that writing is not my job, that's the time I steal here and there, small pieces of the patchwork that turns into days, weeks and years.
Of course he is right, he is. It would be better to write incessantly and in a flow without interruption caused by going to another job. Suddenly I have lost the thread, begin repeating or forgetting. Therefore, I had intended to write a short story, so I could easily keep the whole fiction in my head. But the story decided else and the characters wanted space.
My writing desk, well, it moves around, the desk is well most of the time my computer, sometimes in the bed, but right now on the couch, mostly on a blue computer desk from Ikea. It is far too small, yet it has the advantage to fit in at a small place and in addition it has an extendable table for Bamboo drawing pad and an extra keyboard.
Different times, different places:
Vera Nilsson, who became one of Sweden's leading artists paintedher works in the kitchen and she painted her children, they were the ones who were around. Dig where you stand.
"You take what you have got",  maybe Kajsa Warg never wrote in her famous cooking book, but a quote and a thought that characterized Sweden not only in terms of cuisine.
Or as Inki, my painting teacher said; “you can never blame it on lack of materials, there are always materials around”.

När jag målar grönt,
så är det inte gräs
när jag målar blått,
så är det inte himmel.

Henri Matisse

Men det här är inte en Matisse,
det är en Nordin

 When I put green,
it is not grass
when I put blue,
it is not the sky.

Henri Matisse

But this is not Matisse,
this is Nordin.

I am reading Cornelia Funke " Inkheart " and I love it.

"If you take a book with you on a journey" Mo had said when he put the first ones in her box, "an odd thing happens: The book begins collecting your memories. And forever after you have only to open that book to be back where you first read it. It will all come into your mind with the very first words: the sights you saw in that place, what it smelled like, the ice cream you ate while you were reading it...yes, books are like flypaper -- memories cling to the printed page better than anything else."

Magiska texter, magical reading

"The moon shone in the rocking horse’s eye,
and in the mouse’s eye too,
when Tolly fetched it out from under his pillow to see.
The clock went tick-tock, and in the stillness he thought he heard
little bare feet running across the floor,
then laughter and whispering,
and a sound like the pages of a big book being turned over."
—L. M. Boston, The Children of Green Knowe

This text is magical because it animates the rocking horse, and suggest that something wonderful is happening right there.

Jabberwocky

En slidig ödling borvlad
I bryningen på solvis ples
Och lumpingen var brynklig och
den villa gnutten fnes.

Jabberwocky ur Alice i Spegellandet
Översättning av Gösta Knutsson

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

August Strindberg

" Jag är övertygad om att livet är en lek;

"I am convinced that life is a game;
in the game we split, double, vaporize and condense
we float out, disappear and come together again "

August Strindberg in a letter to Emil Schering April 17, 1907

tomas tranströmmer, nobelpristagare i litteratur 2011

Inne i den väldiga romanska kyrkan
trängdes turisterna i halvmörkret.

Romanesque Arches
(translated by Robin Fulton)
Inside the huge romanesque church the tourists jostled in the half darkness.
Vault gaped behind vault, no complete view.
A few candle-flames flickered.
An angel with no face embraced me
and whispered through my whole body:
“Don’t be ashamed of being human, be proud!
Inside you vault opens behind vault endlessly.
You will never be complete, that’s how it’s meant to be.”
Blind with tears
I was pushed out on the sun-seething piazza
together with Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Herr Tanaka and Signora Sabatini
and inside them all vault opened behind vault endlessly.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever:
Its loveliness increases;
it will never pass into nothingness.
but still will keep a bower quiet for us,
and a sleep full of sweet dreams,
and health, and quiet breathing.
John Keats, Endymion (1818)
